If you are a newbie gardener, how do make sure that your garden gets off to a good start? There’s so much to learn! Where do you begin? Well, let’s start with a few basic gardening tips to help your garden grow into something that is the envy of your neighbour.

Our 5 top gardening tips

Improve the health of the soil

Add rotted manure to your soil, making sure that it’s been composted for at least six months, digging it in well. Look for a soil structure that’s easy to dig, crumbles in your hand and absorbs water easily. So add as much rotted manure as needed to create a healthy base for your plants.

Water once a week

A good long soak is much better than a frequent light watering. If you water the plants deeply once a week this encourages the roots to grow down into the soil and helps them to find more nutrients. On the other hand, a light frequent watering encourages the roots to grow up to find the water, which doesn’t always have a good supply of nutrients.

Make your own mulch

Use all your garden debris in either your compost or as a mulch, chopping it by hand or using an electric mulcher/chipper. A good layer of mulch returns all the goodness back to the soil and reduces the evaporation of water from the surface.

Grow native plants

Growing natives in your garden, as well as vegetables or non-native plants, encourages birds, insects and bees into your garden. This helps with pollination, promotes biodiversity and keeps your garden healthy.

Planting perennials

If you purchase container grown perennials, it’s best to make the depth of the hole just enough so that the plant sits at the same depth as in the container, but twice as wide to give the roots room to grow. Then backfill the hole with the same soil you removed, rather than newly purchased soil.
