Many of us put up a timber fence simply as a way to keep the dogs in our yard or just to provide some privacy in our gardens, giving no particular thought to the colour of the palings. Fence paint colours however, can add something really special to our homes, so maybe it’s time to give them some consideration?
There are two reasons to paint your fence, the first is to make a feature of your fence and the second is to make a feature of your garden.
How to choose fence paint colours
1.Fence paint colours for feature fences
Making a feature of your fence is a modern approach with many people selecting dark grey or navy blue to match or complement their home’s external colours. Dark red or dark green are other popular colours, but the navies and greys are more contemporary. You could of course, select lighter fence paint colours and whilst these colours will make your fence more prominent, they also need repainting a lot more frequently than darker colours.
2.Fence paint colours for feature gardens
If you want to make a feature of your trees, foliate and plants, you want a colour that acts as a background and accentuates the depth of foliage, pushing your garden’s lush colours to the fore, but not clashing with them. Once again, dark navy or grey are both suitable, even charcoal or mauve, but you want to avoid greens for obvious reasons.
Tips on painting your fence
- You need to remove any nails or large splinters that stick out of the timber, followed up with a good high pressure clean.
- One of the best ways to paint a large expanse of fence is with a spray gun.
- But you can also use a brush and roller if you are painting a small area of fence as a feature.
- With the right fence paint colours, you can completely change the look and feel of your home and garden!
