Whether you have an energy packed dog or a bundle of fluff, big or small, climbers or diggers, you need a fence to keep your dog safely on your property. Let’s take a look at some of the factors you need to consider when building a fence to keep your canine friend happy and safe at home.

Is jumping a problem?

If your dog is really big or can jump over tall buildings, then you need the maximum height fence possible! So if 1.8m isn’t tall enough, build your fence on top of a sleeper to give it additional height. An extra height might be the edge you need to keep your dog’s paws on the ground!

Is climbing a problem?

If your dog’s a climber, then don’t even think about a chain link fence. You want something that’s smooth and with no spots to place their paws to climb up and over. Additional height is most probably good in this situation, but a lapped timber fence might be the ideal option.

Is digging a problem?

If your dog is a digger, then you need to go down! Adding a concrete or brick foundation to the fence is a good idea, as long as it runs underneath the fence line. You could also build the fence on top of a single sleeper and place a rock garden in front or sink a single sleeper wall into the ground and build the fence on top.

Is their small size a problem?

If your dog is small enough to squeeze between the palings, you’re in trouble! Your best option is to avoid a picket fence and build a lapped fence instead. This gives them no way to sneak through the palings!

Is barking a problem?

If your dog barks at everyone who walks by and every truck that drives past, maybe stopping their view is a good idea? A lapped timber fence will prevent them from eyeballing passing traffic and hopefully give them no reason to bark.
