Everyone has heard about trends, but who would have thought that fences have trends? Well, a search of social media brings up some surprising facts and fence trends are one of them! So what’s happening in the world of fence trends in Sydney for 2020?

Painted fences

More specifically, dark coloured fences are becoming very popular. Colours such as dark grey, navy and black are stepping up to the plate this year. Dark grey is also a popular choice for the exterior of many residential homes, so it’s no surprise that it’s taking over fences as well. It doesn’t matter what type of timber fence you have in your yard, painting it a dark colour will make you right on trend!

Privacy screens

We have seen a rapid increase in privacy screens, as Sydneysiders use them to hide outdoor utilities, such as garbage bins and A/C compressors, as well as screening their own activities in the garden. After all, no-one wants to be watched by their neighbours or passers-by when they are enjoying themselves in their yard, which is one reason why privacy screens are trending this year. Another reason is that you can create outdoor rooms using screens, enhancing the functionality of your garden and adding interest to your yard. You can even paint these screens in dark colours or install dark coloured aluminium fencing and double down on being trendy in 2020.

Horizontal fencing

Many Sydneysiders are installing horizontal timber slat fencing around their properties, particularly along the front boundary. This has been a growing trend, as homeowners want to make their properties look modern and updated. It’s a great way to put a contemporary spin on the humble timber fence! The addition of lighting to boundary fences is also on the uptick, as more homeowners spend time outdoors in their yards during the evening. Low voltage light is ideal for decks and fences and we expect to see it trending even higher as 2020 marches into 2021.
