A perfectly maintained and healthy lawn is a joy to behold. However if your lawn isn’t looking its best at the moment – knowing how to revive your lawn is the first step to bringing it back to all its glory!
So if your lawn needs CPR, here’s four easy tasks that will rejuvenate it in a matter of weeks.
Remove weeds
Given that most weeds outcompete grass for water and nutrients, if left to linger unattended, your lawn can become more weeds than grass. You can remove these weeds either by hand or by using a spray-on weed killer. However, if you use chemical weed killers be careful that you don’t kill the entire lawn as well!
Aerate and dethatch
Your next task is to use a rake to remove the dead grass that accumulates at the roots of the grass (called dethatching). Next, you use a garden fork to punch 5cm holes into the soil to reduce compaction and let air enter the soil (called aeration). Dethatching and aeration are essential steps in knowing how to revive your lawn and bring it quickly back to life!
Water regularly
The above steps allow water to freely enter the soil, which is necessary if you want to rejuvenate your lawn (particularly if the soil is compacted). Once the soil is aerated and the grass is dethatched, then regular watering should quickly produce noticeable results.
Top dressing & fertilisers
Your final step is to top dress and add fertiliser. Top dressing with an organic compost helps improve drainage, increase nutrient retention and resistance to pests, as well as decreasing the accumulation of thatch. Adding a fertiliser will supply all the nutrients your grass requires to grow thick and healthy. Ideally, you want to fertilise a few weeks before applying the top dressing, as this provides the time needed for the nutrients to slowly percolate into the soil.
