Is it time to replace your fence? Many homeowners find they can easily repair their fence but there comes a point when it’s a losing game. You spend so much time and money repairing an old rotten fence that it’s not worth the effort anymore.
So when is replacing your fence a better option than repairing it again?
Your fence is leaning to one side
There are a few reasons for a leaning fence:
- One or more rotten uprights.
- Uprights not dug deep enough into the ground.
- Uprights not concreted into the ground.
- Strong winds and storms.
- Excessive rain or flooding resulting in unstable soil.
- Invasive tree roots pushing the uprights over.
When the uprights are no longer supporting the fence, you can replace them but it’s often easier to replace the entire fence. It’s usually the best option when you have to replace more than one upright or if it’s an old fence. So in answer to the question – Is it time to replace your fence? Yes, when a fence starts to lean, it’s generally better to replace it rather than repair it.
Your fence needs regular repairs
If you’re always banging nails back into loose palings, replacing rotten palings and runners or even adding support to the runners, rather than replacing them, it’s time to call it a day. Just having to bang nails in the fence to secure loose palings all the time is frustrating, let alone needing to replace rotten wood or add extra support. It’s time to bite the bullet and replace that fence!
Your fence has suffered storm damage
If your fence has been damaged or blown over in a storm or high wind then it’s best to replace it. You can likely claim it on your household insurance if it’s considered to be due to storm damage, which definitely sweetens the pot!
