When most people install their Colorbond fences, they sit back and congratulate themselves on a job well done. But then forget all about them. Whilst these fences are meant to last much longer than other fences. They still need to be maintained to keep them looking great.

You don’t need to worry however, because the only maintenance they really need is a good clean every now and again. Which will go a long way to optimise the life of your fence. So if you are ready to grab your hose and give your Colorbond fence a good clean this weekend, here are our top cleaning tips.

Tips for cleaning your Colorbond fence

  • Unless your Colorbond fence is kept clean by a good downpour on a regular basis. It’s best to wash your fence every six months.
  • If you live in a coastal area where the salt air can cause a problem. It’s best to wash your fence more often.
For example every three rather than six months.
  • Start with hosing your fence. As this might be all you need to remove any dirt or debris that has accumulated. As well as any salt spray.
  • If a good hosing doesn’t do the job. Wash your fence with soapy water (making sure that the soap is not abrasive), using a soft brush, sponge or cloth. Followed with a second hosing to rinse away the soap and dirt.
  • Don’t use any solvents on your Colorbond fence as it can cause significant damage.
  • If the paint has turned chalky due to long term weathering, a fencing specialist can remove this chalky residue and apply a primer to prevent it happening again.
Severe chalking may require the fence to be repainted. But discuss this with your fencing contractor.
  • You can remove mould from your Colorbond fence with a hypochlorite solution. Firstly, check the BlueScope website for details, so you don’t damage the fence.
